Getting into the Christmas Spirit
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. If you’ve been anxiously counting down the days until Christmas just like us, then the wait is finally over. Nothing quite matches this special occasion. Xmas has so many great traditions, it’s simply impossible to pick our favorite one! But what about the stories behind some of them?
While the exact date of Jesus’ birth is unknown, the Romans established December 25 as the official date. This day marked the winter solstice according to the old Julian calendar - an occasion also celebrated as the birth of the sun according to ancient religious traditions. It remained that way even after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Just in case you are wondering - December 25 in the Julian calendar actually corresponds to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar.
Christmas decoration is also full of meanings. The three colors - green, red and gold - each symbolize one common aspect associated with this date. Red represents the blood of Jesus. Gold symbolizes the gift from the three Magi. Green, meanwhile, represents eternal life. Speaking of which, the evergreen tree carries the same meaning. The star on top of it symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem.
Of course, we can’t really talk about Xmas traditions without mentioning gifts, can we? Christmas presents are among the oldest holiday traditions, also dating back to ancient Rome. According to Christmas tradition, the presents symbolize the gifts offered by the three magi.
And then we have our beloved Santa Claus. Christmas’ most generous character is based on Saint Nicholas, a Christian bishop from the 4th century known for offering secret gifts to help those in need. Modern day Santa, with his famous red coat, long white beard and magical reindeer sleigh became popular during the 19th century. His kind spirit carried on and remains unchanged after all this time, however.
