There are many different versions of the holiday, we’ll focus on a couple of them here. The idea of a “Thanksgiving” first started as a way to celebrate the harvest. In England, the day, which always changed, became an integral part of the English Reformation. There were many holidays stricken from the books by the Church of England and replaced by Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving.
When there was a natural disaster or a defeat in war, there would be Days of Fasting as these were seen as judgements from God. Following a good harvest or winning a battle, there were Days of Thanksgiving. These celebrations were never on a specific day, they were random according to whenever any of these events occurred. There was always an element of “thanks” involved in these celebrations, from the harvest to certain events, and this evolved into the modern day Thanksgiving we have now.
The origin of the modern day Thanksgiving in the US, the holiday as we know it now is also in dispute. The major territories vying for the claim that the Thanksgiving in the US started in their state include Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, and Florida. While the dispute between Massachusetts and Virginia are based on regional claims that stem from religious differences, the Florida and Texas claims come from history experts specializing in the time period of Spanish rule in the US territories.
After much discussion of the origin of the holiday and the nature of its religious implications, the one thing that remains steadfast is the timeframe when Thanksgiving became an official holiday set on the last Thursday of November. This notion was put forth by Sarah Josepha Hale who tried to have this enacted for 40 years through letters to various politicians. This inspired one Abraham Lincoln who enacted a Presidential proclamation in 1963 to that effect. This idea was certainly solid but it did not take root until the 1870s due to the Civil War, the South obviously hesitating to agree to anything the President made overtures on. The date of the holiday was later changed to the fourth Thursday of November by President Roosevelt in 1941.
It’s been a long road for Thanksgiving. It has made its way from a harvest celebration to religious centerpiece to national holiday. At the end of the day, Thanksgiving has become a day to feast, spend with loved ones and to look back together on all that is good in each other’s lives - To be thankful for it all.
