And to get you ready for it, we have also prepared a special blog post. Do you know the story behind the day’s name? Let’s learn a bit more about this day and why it became closely tied to these massive sales.
The Story Behind Black Friday
There are two different stories behind the origin of the name. One of them is slightly more accurate. The second one is an attempt at slightly altering the original story. While we now associate Black Friday with can’t-miss offers and huge sales, the term had a completely different meaning. In fact, Black Friday initially had a negative connotation.
It’s difficult to point out precisely when the term was used for the first time. The day after Thanksgiving traditionally marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. And, as you can probably imagine, things usually got a bit hectic during that time of the year.
Police officers and bus drivers in Philadelphia called it Black Friday. The day also happened to fall right between Thanksgiving and the annual Army vs. Navy college football game, which is traditionally held in Philly. This resulted in a very busy day, crowded streets and long traffic jams. So, in other words, Black Friday originally had a bad connotation.
It continued this way until the 1980s, when the term gained nationwide recognition. But Black Friday still sounded like a very negative term. The next step was to turn the meaning around somehow.
Merchants then came up with an idea to spin the story around. It all relied on the idea that businesses operate in the red for most of the year. However, once the holiday season rolled in, they would instantly turn a profit. Black Friday marked the point in which businesses went from operating in the red to operating in the black. A very clever idea, isn’t it? Fortunately, the new explanation actually caught on, and many people believe that this is the real story behind the name.
One way or the other, Black Friday left its negative meaning behind. If anything, we all have this day circled on the calendar. Black Friday has now become a global event. And the Monday after, which also saw a significant increase in ecommerce sales, is now called Cyber Monday.
