The history of Valentine’s Day, as well as its patron saint is highly debatable. Valentine’s Day, as we think of it today, contains traces of both Ancient Roman and Christian traditions. When the priest’s actions were discovered, he was jailed and sentenced to death.
Legend has it, while serving his sentence, Valentine fell in love with a young girl, quite possibly his jailer's daughter and before his death, wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression you surely recognize. The Christian Church may have also decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to Christianize the pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, which was widely celebrated on February 15th. St. Valentine’s popular reputation made the holiday easily accepted, so much in fact, that we still celebrate it today! Though it is most popular in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, the holiday is also celebrated in other countries, like France, Mexico, and South Korea, and in the Philippines, it’s common for mass weddings for hundreds of couples to take place on this date!
